Composting Project

$693.97

Submitted by Christopher Wren, East Greenwich High School

This innovative grant solves a problem and creates a learning opportunity at the same time. The new greenhouses at the high school are requiring sizeable soil purchases. By composting some of the waste materials the school generates, the school can help to meet those soil requirements. The composting process will be used as an interactive, hands on approach to studying biogeochemical cycling, a component of the earth and life science curricula. Students will be involved in all stages, from collection of compostable materials, turning, sampling and nutrient levels, and using the soil created for greenhouse related projects.

"This will be great. We generate quite a lot of biodegradable, compostable waste. This will enable us to track some of those materials through the decomposition process, conduct various soil chemistry tests, and get our hands dirty using the soil we create, in the greenhouses. Hopefully some of the students will set up similar composting systems in their own gardens. Its a terrific way to produce rich, fertile soil, and a nice, healthy, eco friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers.”  - Christopher Wren
